Is the EU Taming Artificial Intelligence?

Diagnostics, pricing, data analysis — the list could go on for a long time. With the rise of the data economy, the importance of artificial intelligence is growing inexorably. This technology plays a central role in the systematic collection and analysis of large volumes of data. The EU has prepared a draft regulation for the regulation of AI. According to this proposal, AI systems are to be assigned to four risk categories. Strict requirements are to apply to AI systems whose use entails a high risk due to their proximity to particularly sensitive areas, such as fundamental rights, health and safety. The aim of the future regulation is to find the “golden mean” between two regulatory objectives: on the one hand, ensuring that the use of modern technology does not create a “legal vacuum”, while on the other hand maintaining the EU’s global competitiveness.
